The new edition of vol 1 originally published in 1985 and reprinted in 1997 together with vol. 2 and now reviewed and enlarged.
In comparison with the Italian bibliography which is concerned with thematic subjects such as with orders of chivalry or of merit or, medals and decorations with variations on the historical period covered, this book has the merit of dealing with both categories.
That is, it handles both the orders of chivalry or of merit which were founded or renovated between 1784 and 1900, not only in the Italian Kingdom, but also in the former States that existed in the Italian Peninsula before the unification under the House of Savoy dynasty. Namely, in the kingdoms of Piedmont-Sardinia, Lombardy-Veneto, duchies of Parma, Modena and Tuscany, the Pontifical States and the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily
But the book also deals with other decorations awarded in Italy, namely municipal or commemorative medals, struck and profusely awarded during the Risorgimento, as well as the foreign decorations awarded to Italians or related to Italy.
Near 900 medals are described and catalogued in 591 sheets, in chronological order and by State, including medals, decorations and insignia of orders and describing also some rare or, till now, not well known or even unknown specimens. The volume is profusely illustrated in colours, with images of the decorations in real size. Each sheet is also accompanied by rather brief historical notes.
Although it does not adopt, rigorously speaking, a Phaleristic approach and methodology, as we understand it, but rather a Numismatic one, addressed mainly to collectors, in which the historical, social and cultural aspects and context of decorations are irrelevant or ignored, this work has even so its merits.
Indeed, it is above all a monumental illustrated Guide of Italian Phaleristics from the end of the XVIII century to 1900, as complete as possible and essential to anyone interested in the subject.
If compared with other major Italian books on the subject published over the past 40 years, as for example the works of Dimitri BINI (Le medaglie ufficiali, militari e civili, del Regno d’Italia 1861-1943, Pontedera, CLD Libri Editore, 2008) de Roberto MANNO (Duecento anni di medaglie. I segni del valore e della partecipazione ad eventi storici dal 1793 al 1993, Hobby & Work Publishing, 1995), de Costantino SCARPA e Paolo SÉZANNE, (Le decorazioni del Regno di Sardegna e del Regno d’Italia, (due volumi), Uffici storici Esercito – Marina – Aeronautica, 1982-1985) ou, de Ercoli ERCOLE (Le medaglie al valore, al merito e commemorative – Militari e Civili nei Regni di Sardegna, d’Italia e nella Repubblica Italiana – 1793-1976, I.D.L., 1976), this book of A. Brambilla excels for its wide thematic scope, detail and exhaustivity in compiling Italian decorations.
As a final remark it is worthwhile to note that this book is published in a country, with a considerable phaleristic bibliography and having a vast number of Numismatics and Phaleristic amateurs and of collectors, but which has failed to have until now a society specifically dedicated to Phaleristics.
Our Academy is nevertheless honoured to have among its Founding Members an Italian phalerist.

C’est la nouvelle édition du vol. 1, publié en 1985 et réimprimé en 1997 avec le vol. 2, révisée et élargie.
En comparaison avec la bibliographie italienne dédiée surtout sur la thématique des ordres de chevalerie ou du mérite ou, sur des médailles et décorations, d’une période déterminée ce livre a le mérite d’aborder les deux catégories.
En effet il couvre les ordres de chevalerie ou du mérite fondés ou rénovés entre 1784 et 1900, non seulement au Royaume d’Italie, mais aussi dans les anciens états qui existaient dans la Péninsule Italienne avant l’unification sous la dynastie de la Maison de Savoie. Notamment, aux royaumes du Piedmont-Sardaigne, Lombardie-Vénétie, les duchés de Parme, Modène et Toscane, les États Pontificaux et les Royaumes de Naples et Sicilie.
Mais le livre s’occupe aussi sur les décorations décernées en Italie, notamment des médailles municipales ou commémoratives faites et attribuées en profusion pendant le Risorgimento, et sur les médailles étrangères décernées à des Italiens ou relatives à l’Italie.
Environs 900 pièces sont décrites et cataloguées dans 591 fiches, par ordre chronologique et d’États, en incluant médailles, décorations et insignes des ordres, et en décrivant aussi certaines pièces rares ou, pas très connues ou même inconnues jusqu’à maintenant. Le volume richement illustré en couleurs a des images aux dimensions réelles. Chaque fiche est accompagnée des brèves notes historiques.
Et même si on n’adopte pas, en rigueur, une approche et une méthodologie Phaléristique, telle que nous l’entendons, mais plutôt une vision Numismatique, adressée aux collectionneurs, où les aspects historiques, sociaux et culturels des décorations sont ignorés ou hors sujet, ce livre a toutefois du mérite.
Car, en effet, il s’agit surtout d’un Guide monumental et bien illustré de la Phaléristique Italienne depuis la fin du XVIII siècle jusqu’à 1900 aussi complet qui possible et essentiel pour tous qui s’intéressent sur ce thème.
Si on le compare avec les œuvres majeures publiées en Italie dans les derniers 40 années, comme par exemple les livres de Dimitri BINI (Le medaglie ufficiali, militari e civili, del Regno d’Italia 1861-1943, Pontedera, CLD Libri Editore, 2008) de Roberto MANNO (Duecento anni di medaglie. Brambilla excelle par son but thématique élargie, détail et exhaustivité dans la compilation des décorations Italiennes.
Enfin, on ne peut pas laisser de remarquer que ce livre est publié dans un pays, qui ayant une riche bibliographie phaléristique et un grand nombre d’amateurs de Numismatique et de Phaléristique et de collectionneurs, n’a pas toujours aboutit à la création d’une association spécifiquement dédiée à la Phaléristique.
Notre Académie pourtant est honorée pour avoir parmi ses membres fondateurs un Académicien Italien.
